What is Juvederm?
Injected directly into targeted areas of the skin, Juvéderm reduces the appearance of wrinkles and folds while also smoothing skin for an overall enhanced appearance.
Juvéderm XC is a new, FDA-approved formula of the effective Juvéderm dermal filler that contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to minimize the mild discomfort previously associated with this treatment. This eliminates the need for additional anesthetic, as well as the wait time of up to 30 minutes for the numbness to take effect.
The lidocaine contained within this injection takes only seconds to spread across the treatment area. Results are reported to last up to a year, making Juvéderm one of the most commonly requested treatments at our Honolulu practice.
How long is the Juvéderm procedure?
JUVÉDERM XC injections take about 15 minutes to administer here in our office at Maehara Eye Surgery & Laser. Given under the skin in the targeted area to add volume or fill in wrinkles and folds. Afterward, Dr. Maehara may gently massage the treated area(s) to ensure comfort and results.
What should I expect after Juvederm injections?
Once treatment is completed, patients can return, with virtually no downtime, to their regular activities. For the first 24 hours after treatment, to reduce the risk of complications, patients should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and alcohol consumption.
How long after Juvéderm will I see results?
The results of JUVÉDERM XC are visible immediately after injection; any swelling and bruising, to which ice can be applied, should subside during the next few days. Results can last 6 to 9 months, and, in some cases, up to a year. However, according to its manufacturer, “Results from injectable dermal filler vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental ‘touch up’ treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal correction of . . . wrinkles and folds.”
What can JUVÉDERM® XC Treat?
You may have heard of JUVÉDERM® injectable soft tissue fillers. There’s an entire family of products in this line. JUVÉDERM® XC is the branding for all of the brand fillers that are formulated with lidocaine. A versatile dermal filler, JUVÉDERM® XC is often used to correct signs of aging such as nasolabial folds, smile lines, and marionette lines. These are the creases that develop around the nose, mouth, and chin as you age. They result from a loss of tissue volume from the mid-face down toward the jawline.
JUVÉDERM® XC products work by inserting strands of linked hyaluronic acid particles beneath wrinkles and creases. Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in tissues like joints, the eyes, and your skin. This means you won’t have an allergic reaction to the product. When hyaluronic acid enters the skin via small injections, it draws in water from nearby tissues. The water molecules are tethered to the particles of hyaluronic acid, achieving results that can last a year or longer.
Do Injections of JUVÉDERM XC Hurt?
Injectable treatments always have some degree of sensation. However, the XC in JUVÉDERM® XC means that sensation is immediately diminished with lidocaine! Will you feel your injections? Probably. Will they hurt? Most likely not one bit. If you’re concerned that you may not tolerate your injectable treatment well, please let us know. We can discuss ways to improve your experience.
What Side Effects Might I Experience after Receiving JUVÉDERM XC Injections?
Injections break the skin. Even when a tiny needle is used, JUVÉDERM® XC injections may cause minor side effects. The most common include itching, swelling, firmness, tenderness, soreness, and tiny bumps or lumps. Bruising may occur, but this risk can be diminished by avoiding alcohol and other blood-thinning products for a few days before your appointment. Because the skin is broken, there is also a risk of infection. However, because we use a tiny needle to administer injectable cosmetic treatments, this risk is incredibly low.
When Will I See the Final Results of My JUVÉDERM XC Injections?
You can expect to notice a visible change in your skin and your appearance immediately after receiving your JUVÉDERM® XC injections. This is one of the most gratifying aspects of this treatment! Still, it can take a total of two weeks for the full effects of this product to become evident. This is referred to as “settling,” and it’s a normal process by which the hyaluronic acid integrates into the tissue beneath lines and creases. If needed, we can make adjustments to your treatment to ensure you receive the most satisfying results.
Are There Any Precautions I Need to Take Before or After My JUVÉDERM XC Injections?
Your goal, and ours, is to make sure you achieve the best results from your JUVÉDERM® XC injectable treatment. You can help this process by avoiding excessive sun exposure, alcohol, and blood-thinning products like aspirin and ibuprofen for at least 48 hours before and 48 hours after your appointment. If you choose not to avoid such products, your final results should not be impacted. You may, however, experience more noticeable side effects.
Can I Combine My JUVÉDERM XC Treatment with Other Services?
You can combine your JUVÉDERM® XC injections with other cosmetic treatments, yes! This is often done to further enhance facial rejuvenation. JUVÉDERM® XC works differently than injectables like BOTOX®, for instance. Together, these two powerhouse injectable cosmetics can reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles like frown lines while simultaneously rejuvenating the lower regions of the face.
